The cinema of Ousmane Sembène returns to UK screens this autumn!

Discover the highly acclaimed documentary Sembène! capturing the life of Senegalese filmmaker Ousmane Sembène, known as the father of African cinema, as well as the film Moolaadé at the GFT this November!

Sembène! (Samba Gadjigo & Jason Silverman, Senegal/US, 2015)

In 1952, Ousmane SembeÌ€ne, a dockworker and school dropout from Senegal, began dreaming an impossible dream: to become a storyteller for a new Africa. This documentary tells the true story of the ”˜father of African cinema’, the self-taught filmmaker who fought a monumental, 50-year-long battle to give African stories to Africans. Using rare archival footage and more than 100 hours of exclusive material, SembeÌ€ne! follows an ordinary man who transformed himself into a fearless spokesperson for the marginalised, and became a hero to millions.

This screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Jason Silverman.

Moolaadé (Ousmane Sembène, Senegal, 2004)

Colle Gallo Ardo Sy, a circumcised woman, has managed to help her only daughter escape from the ritual of ”˜purification’ organised every seven years. Now that the next ritual is about to happen, four young girls have fled from the village to escape from excision. Moolaadé is a moving, embracing and life-affirming film with the power to change long-held attitudes, a film regarded as Sembène’s masterpiece, made when he was already 81 years old.
