In May the GFT is screening several French film:

WATER LILIES (Naissance des Pieuvres) Friday 16 – Saturday 17 May

Celine Sciamma’s acclaimed debut is a perceptive coming of age drama that captures all the anguish and yearning of adolescence. Marie, Floriane and Anne are all desperate for a place in the local synchronised swimming team. A summer at the pool brings the distraction of the dishy Francois but it is a summer in which the girls learn all about secret desires, the ties of friendship and the complex adult world that is beckoning to them. Brilliantly acted and sensitively handled, this is a refreshing take on a familiar theme. GFF08

CARAMEL Friday 16 – Thursday 29 May

Nadine Labaki’s delightful debut feature signals the arrival of a bright new talent in world cinema. Set in a Lebanese beauty salon, it follows the lives and loves of five women, offering a portrait of Beirut that is very different from the city depicted in news bulletins. Labaki also stars as Layale, a young woman struggling with a failing relationship with a married man. The title is taken from the homemade caramel used for leg waxing in the salon and the film is an equally sweet, golden comedy of manners. GFF08

WELCOME TO THE STICKS (Bienvenue Chez Les Ch’tis) Friday 23 – Thursday 29 May

For years the Nord Pas-de-Calais has been stereotyped as a miserable hell of disused coal mines and rusting factories, and its inhabitants as depressed, violent alcoholics who speak an impenetrable patois, Ch’timi. This all changed a few weeks ago, with the release of comedian Dany Boon’s hilarious new comedy, which became a huge hit at the French box office, where a massive 8 million tickets were sold in just two weeks. The film retraces the misadventures of a postal worker who moves north for work and finds himself unexpectedly charmed by the region’s unusual customs and warm hospitality as embodied by Boon’s character Antoine, the local postman. A charming and effervescent French film. More information.
