The Alliance Française is hosting a talk on "The two Henriettas: Henrietta of France (1609- 1669) and Henrietta of England (1644- 1670), mother and daughter".
Wednesday 15 October 2008, 7 pm Lecture in French by Jacqueline Duchêne “Les deux Henriette : Henriette de France (1609-1669) et Henriette d’Angleterre (1644-1670), mère et fille.” The historian Jacqueline Duchêne, a 17th century specialist, is the author of Henriette d’Angleterre, duchesse d’Orléans. She has also written another two biographies and several historical novels, and worked with her late husband Roger Duchêne on the Correspondance of Madame de Sévigné for the prestigious Pléiade collection. This lecture focuses on the paradoxical destinies of a mother and her daughter, known as Henrietta of France and Henrietta of England. The first (daughter of King Henry IV of France and Marie de Médicis) went to England as the wife of Charles I. With her obstinate temperament, she had considerable influence over her husband’s political decisions. However, during the English Civil War in which Charles was defeated by Cromwell, and then beheaded, she had to seek refuge in France, where she was re-united two years later with her two-year old daughter. But France was on the brink of its own civil war, the Fronde (1648-53), so mother and daughter had to live in straitened circumstances, and were kept well away from the French court. In 1660, with the Restoration in England, this situation changed completely, for it was Henrietta of France’s son who took the throne as Charles II. This led to both his mother and sister gaining great influence at the court of Louis XIV, an influence illustrated when Henrietta of England, at the age of 17, married her cousin Philippe, Duke of Orléans, who was Louis XIV’s brother.
