’I am she; this woman, this brute beast so stubborn in her pleasure and as I break sweat and reach clarity, I finally understand that my body craves more than intimacy, is a carnal knowledge of all things.’

Sidonie Gabrielle Colette (1873- 1954) was the Madonna of the early 20th century. A genius of self-promotion and "le beau langage," by the end of her life Colette had become the mythical figure she and a collective act of faith had created. Armed with her Parker pens and little pit-bull Toby, Colette makes the leap from married woman of letters to high society corrupt darling; Parisian music-hall megastar and scandalous lesbian to wife of three husbands; war correspondent and mother to eventually becoming France’s greatest female writer. And yet her finest creation may have been herself.
