The GFT has put together an exceptional summer of French films.
As much as we hope you will all be hopping to France for a few weeks this summer, we are quite aware that some will actually stay in Glasgow. If you are in the latter category, the GFT will bring over a large selection of films from France or on France for you to enjoy. Continuing a very successful season in July will be Fred Cavayé’s Anything For Her (Tout pour elle, Saturday, July 11, 2.30 and Sunday July 12, 7.45) , a superb and utterly gripping thriller starring Diane Kruger and Vincent Lindon. Cannes sensation Looking for Eric (Friday 24 July, 3.30/6.00 and Saturday July 25, 2.00/8.30) is not a French film as such but the connections are definitely there and Ken Loach has long been recognised as France’s preferred British film director. Eric Cantona will also appear in French Film (Tuesday Julay 14, 12.45 and Wednesday July 15, 6.45), a smart romantic comedy by Jackie Oudney, comparing British and French attitudes to love. Again, although not a French film, Antechrist (Sunday Aug. 16th to Tuesday Aug. 18, check guides for times), by Lars von Trier, caused a major stir on La Croisette this year. It stars French actress Charlotte Gainsbourg. The hit sensation of this spring in France, Coco Before Chanel (Coco avant Chanel, Friday July 31 to Thursday August 20, check guides for times), will give you the opportunity to see Audrey Tautou at her best. "Bearing a striking resemblance to the real woman, Tautou communicates Chanel’s emancipated, fearless approach to life and her steely resolve while letting subtle layers of hurt, humiliation and grief show through her pride" critics have said. After tremendous success at the recent EIFF, both installments of the Mesrine saga, (Mesrine: l’instinct de mort, Preview Sunday Aug. 2 (5.15) and Friday Aug. 7 to Thursday Aug 20 and Mesrine - l’ennemi Public No 1, Preview Sunday Aug. 2 (7.45) and Friday Aug. 28 to Thursday Sept 10) will screen this summer at the GFT. Based on the true story of 70’s French Godfather Mesrine, the César-winning sequel is fast becoming a modern gangster classic. If the cinema can be divided between its storytellers and its poets, Claire Denis unquestionably falls into the latter category. However, 35 shots of Rum (35 Rhums, Friday July 31 to Thursday Aug. 6) is actually considerably plot-driven – but that story always supports atmosphere, colour and tone. As if this was not enough, the GFT is also running an exceptional 50th anniversary retrospective on La Nouvelle Vague. |
