The French have never been known to give in that easily to criticism. CulturesFrance front man Olivier Poivre d’Arvor answers TIME back.
In its December (European) edition, TIME Magazine heralded the death of French culture. "Quick, name a living artist or writer from France who has global significance" the cover read, which echoed more "Who wants to be a millionaire" than culture per se. "Culture and balance of trade cannot be confused; art cannot be summed up by the art market, the quality of an oeuvre compared to cultural consumption" replies CulturesFrance front man Olivier Poivre d’Arvor in Great TIME for French Culture, a special publication by the French cultural operator, and a formal answer to TIME magazine and our American friends. CulturesFrance thought they might buy a full in TIME and publish a list of "French stars" with worldwide recognition. "but apart from the embarrassment of having to pay a great deal to obtain the right of reply , there [was] also a very simple and delightful problem. [They] would never have been able to fit all these people onto a single page layout." The full text of Olivier Poivre d’Arvor’s reply to TIME Magazine is available on line and at our library. It is fierce, Gallic and the very reason why the French are so French. We strongly recommend it.
