Daniel Pennac was born in Casablanca in 1944, his father being in the army. He travelled widely in his youth, in Europe, Asia and Africa. He did all sorts of jobs including woodcutter, Paris cab driver, illustrator and schoolteacher. Daniel Pennac is one of the most translated authors in France, with books for both adults and children appearing in more than thirty languages around the world. Daniel Pennac is one of France’s most celebrated authors. Chagrin d’Ecole is a passionate defence of reading for pleasure. It is a guide unlike any other: fresh, sympathetic, witty and never didactic, a work of literature in its own right and should be read by everyone who cares about children and reading. In "Chagrin d’école", novelist Pennac mixes anecdotes with reflections on the state of French education, the role of parents and the expectations of pupils. "Chagrin d’école" was awarded the Renaudot Prize.
